Do’s & Don’t’s of Wearing Lace Wigs

Wigs are not new on the fashion scene. In fact, they seem to be more popular as they look more natural and people learn more about how to wear them properly. There are many types of wigs on the market, some manufactured in mass quantity and sold in local beauty stores as well as online. Women are quickly realizing the ease and convenience of wearing wigs but there are also precautions that should be conveyed.

As wigs grow in popularity, they have also contributed to a common issue for women, hair loss. For various reasons such as extended improper wear, excessive use of adhesives and ill-fitting caps, wigs have contributed to an already alarming problem for women. The greatest issue proves to be information and education concerning proper wear and care for those who wear wigs.

Growing in popularity are lace wigs. These are wigs that became popular on the big screen and have been popular now for many years. Lace wigs are made from a lace base, a high-quality lace material that resembles the scalp. The hair is attached by hand tying it to the lace for a more realistic look. When installed, the hand-tied hair looks as though it grows from the scalp. The average person can now purchase these wigs and use them at home with no outside assistance but problems can arise when adhesives are introduced.

The adhesives were originally created for use with lace wigs based on their use in movies and plays when actors would need the style to remain in place for the duration of their work. When everyday people use these products, it creates a huge problem, beginning with proper placement and application to the skin. Allergic reactions, overuse of product and extended wear have caused adverse reactions for some users.

Below are some tips to consider if you plan to purchase and wear a lace wig in the near future.

  1. There are various types of lace wigs such as 360 lace meaning the entire wig is made from lace, lace frontal meaning the portion of the wig from one ear to the other is made from lace and the rest is made of tracks sewn to a cap. Lastly, there are lace closure wigs, meaning a 4 x 4 section of the wig is made of lace while the remaining portion is made from tracks sewn to a cap.

  2. The adhesive is not always required to wear lace wigs. With new technology and better manufacturing techniques, wigs are not bound to the old way of doing things. A proper fitting lace wig can be worn securely without the use of adhesive.

  3. It is highly recommended that you try on a lace wig before you buy it. You may find the wig does not provide you with the security that you need without adhesive. The last thing you want to do is buy a wig only to realize you don’t secure wearing it.

  4. You will need to cut the lace before wearing the wig. Usually, a small portion of excess lace is left on the front of the wig and will need to be cut before wearing.

  5. You will need to wear a flesh-toned wig cap underneath your lace wig to maintain a natural appearance.

  6. If you are uncomfortable installing a lace wig using adhesive, please seek the assistance of a licensed hairstylist. This will save you time and your hair in the end.

Happy Styling!
