What Are The 3 Levels of Hair Breakage?

You see small pieces of hair in the sink and you freak out right? Now for the diagnosis…. Can you tell whether your hair is breaking, shedding or both? Does this sound like you when you comb or brush your hair? I’m going to outline the 3 levels of hair breakage and tell you when you need to spring into action!

Level 1 is Normal and more balanced. It usually happens when hair is handled too rough. Typically you will notice 10 or fewer broken strands on wash days/ 5 or fewer on non-wash days. (does not include the natural hair shedding).

Level 1 REPAIR can usually be repaired in 1 moisturizing deep conditioning session. (check with your hair stylist for options)

Level 2 is Moderate. Occurs when there is improper protein/moisture balance. You will notice hair covering the surface where combing or styling. Losing 10 to 15 hairs w/o washing, 20 or more on wash days. Medium to large chunks of hair lost when styling at this level.

Level 2 REPAIR At this level you will need to repeat the deep conditioning regimen each week for 3 to 5 weeks to restore.

Level 3 is Severe. Symptoms are thinning, short pieces and patchy hair loss. Loss of hair clumps during comb-outs & on wash days. Using chemicals such as relaxers and excessive heat can take hair from level 1 to level 3 in a short time.

Level 3 REPAIR At this level you will need to repeat the deep conditioning regimen each week for 6 to 8 weeks until moisture levels are back to normal.

Early detection in hair loss is key just as it is in any other health situation. You should always seek the expertise of your hair stylist.
